Raised in a dying steel town surrounded by cornfields, Maggie was drawn to the food justice movement in Oakland, CA and landed her first job there as a nutrition and arts educator. Her youth and community work soon evolved into a socially engaged art practice. Today, Maggie uses various media, including, food, photography, performance, and installation, to reflect and inspire healing on personal and community levels. She creates rituals, often with mundane objects, in collaboration with participants. Her work draws on both personal experiences and observations of larger social and economic structures, especially those that relate to race, gender, and labor. Maggie’s healing and creative path as an entrepreneur, chef and teacher is expressed as a living art in her business, The Heirloom Chef.
Harvested blood of the earth
Thank you for sharing with me
Your bare honest body
All you have ever felt and known
Your offering of yourself unto me
I sow our histories
Divided and united
Into my understanding
Of myself of you and of us
So that I may begin to unravel
My offering of my own
My blood and my body
Wholly and knowingly
